The Kneipp Health System
The Kneipp health system is a holistic approach to general health developed by Sebastian Kneipp, a Bavarian priest who lived in the 19th century.
Diagnosed with tuberculosis, Kneipp searched the old medical books of Chinese origin kept in the church in order to feel better. He tried to treat his illness by natural means, and he succeeded. Kneipp treated himself by entering the cold water that flowed through the middle of the town every day.
Later, many people, including a pope, were treated with Kneipp’s method. Sebastian Kneipp’s approach includes hydrotherapy, herbalism and aerobic exercise. Today, Kneipp physiotherapy is a classic form of naturopathy.
The Kneipp Pool: “Water Treading”
Known as the most effective of the Kneipp therapies, the Kneipp pool is also known as “Water Treading” (walking in water). Two separate designs of Kneipp pool are offered to users:
- Corridor Kneipp
- Round Kneipp
How Do Kneipp Pools Work?
Kneipp pools are a therapy method that generally works by exposing the legs and feet to cold and hot water in turn. This therapy is used to boost blood circulation, strengthen the immune system and create a general sense of well-being.
The pools used in Kneipp therapy are generally purpose-designed and have specific temperatures and water pressures. They involve using the water with special techniques applied to the body.
Stepping into cold water after hot water baths generally creates a contrast in the body and stimulates blood circulation.

Kneipp therapy is a popular natural health method used today in many spas and health centres. The teachings of Sebastian Kneipp represent a holistic approach to health that emphasises the positive effects of water on well-being.
Using a Kneipp Pool and Its Benefits
In a Kneipp pool, the feet are warmed and cooled in turn. Each session should last 30–40 steps. During this, if the calves turn red, it shows that the circulatory system is responding and that the therapy is being done correctly. The warm water should be 37°C, and the cold water should be chosen to be cold enough.
In the Kneipp bath used in cures under medical supervision, the arms and legs are immersed in warm and cold water in treatment tubs, which speeds up blood circulation. In this way the tissues are supplied with oxygen.
Regular use of a Kneipp foot pool strengthens the blood vessels and has a positive effect on blood circulation. In Germany, Kneipp therapy is recommended in particular in the following cases and for the following people:
- For the treatment of varicose veins
- For people under stress who suffer tension headaches
- For people with borderline hypertension
- For people with diabetes
- For people with cellulite complaints
