History of Fitness
The history of fitness shows how people’s focus on physical activity and health has evolved. People have been active for thousands of years, but the modern fitness movement is generally traced back to the middle and late 19th century. Here is a brief look at the key periods in the history of fitness:
- Antiquity (BC): Sport and physical activity were important in the cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome. The Olympic Games were the pinnacle of athletics in antiquity.
- Middle Ages: In the Middle Ages, physical activity took place mainly to develop fighting skills, alongside military training and the training of knights.
- Renaissance (14th–17th Century): Interest in the human body and health grew during the Renaissance. The Italian scientist Girolamo Mercuriale stressed the importance of sport and exercise in his work “De Arte Gymnastica”.
- 18th and 19th Centuries: With the Industrial Revolution, more attention began to be paid to the physical health of the working class. Physical education became part of the school curriculum. With the emergence of sports clubs and organisations, competitive sports and training also became widespread.
- 20th Century: From the early 20th century, fitness culture became increasingly popular. Books and programmes on exercise and healthy living appeared. The first gyms and fitness clubs were founded in this period.
- 1980s and After: In this period the fitness industry boomed. Aerobics, fitness videos and personal training became popular. Healthy eating and wellness trends also grew.
- 21st Century: With advances in technology, innovative tools such as fitness apps, online workout programmes and wearable technology entered the fitness world. New exercise trends emerged, such as functional training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
The history of fitness is a field that has continually evolved. Today, fitness is regarded as a holistic approach that covers not only physical health but also mental health.
